Carb identification.

I know a friend with a 79 cj7, just wondering if that most likely had a 258 or a 238? Are the intakes the same for those engines or not? What would this have had for a carb? Since there are no emissions left in my wrangler and I have the carter bbd, would it help to go to the carb from a 79 with no stepper motor, even though mine is bypassed? Thanks for the info. Mike

Re: Carb identification.

78 was last yr. for 232, so its probably a 258 with non computer Carter 2bbl bbd.

Re: Carb identification.

Would a non-computer carter bbd carb make any difference vs the computer carter bbd without a computer? I was thinking that maybe the stepper motor or emissions part was messing it up since it still doesn't idle that well, even after the venturies have been cleaned. Mike

Re: Carb identification.

Perhaps the carb is just toast.

Grab the choke linkage, and the throttle linkage, and wiggle it.. does it wiggle alot? bearings could be worn out.

Another test is to fire it up, let it run for a bit, then spray the base/everywhere except for the filter with WD40, if the engine pitch changes you probably have some leaks. Might be time to get a MC2100. Any idiot could do the swap. it takes about 4 hours. and is relatively cheap even with all new parts.
