5 speed to auto

How hard is it to swap out the 5 speed (T5 I believe) for an auto in my 86 CJ7? What auto tranny is best for this?

Re: 5 speed to auto

IMHO, the TF999....

You're going to need:

1. Transmission.
2. Automatic's neutral safety wiring harness.
3. Floor shifter or Column shifter (and Linkage)for the automatic.
4. Kick-down assembly.
5. Possibly a new tunnel transmission cover.
6. I'd suggest also:
a. Deep oil pan.
b. Clocking ring for the Dana300.
c. Valve body shift kit.

If you're going to be spinning over 33" tires... you may want to go with a TF727.

I have 33" tires and don't plan on changing them. How much money do you think a project like this would cost?

Re: 5 speed to auto

It depends if you shop around or not. The transmission is going to be used... and if so, I'd suggest you rebuild it (easy... 6 hours start to finsh) or have it rebuilt since it's out of the vehicle. Take the harness and kickdown linkage with it.

Transmissions run, used anywhere from $110 on up... and a rebuild kit's about $50.

The column you can find at a Junkyard... or use a GM column. Otherwise a LOKAR or B&M shifter will be about $140 to $180.

Shift kits are about $100.
Deep pans are about the same.
