dimension for tuffy console

i don't want to spend the $$ for a tuffy console (the ones between the seats with place for radio), so i am gonna try to make a similar one. does anyone have any pics with more detail than in mag ads or maybe happen to have a few dimensions.....i'd really appreciate it .....

thanks all

Re: dimension for tuffy console

Hey Shawn,

A suggestion: Rather than build from scratch, start with an ammo can. There are one or two that are the PERFECT size for a console. I don't remember the specifics, but I think it was 20mm Helicopter cans. Somebody did a pretty nice lockable console using these. Can't remember who or where they posted, but essentially they just mounted it, put a u-bolt behind the opening hasp, cut the appropriate slot in the hasp and slapped a padlock on it.

Cheap, fast, effective, easily found, water tight, lockable, no rattles, what more can you ask for $20?

Oh, found it at http://www.jeepz.com/offroad/howto/accessories/console/

Re: dimension for tuffy console

Not sure if bluseman2a is referring to the one I made, but here's a link to some pictures. There is a good description and more pictures somewhere in the past of this BBS if you search also (ammo can center console).

Re: dimension for tuffy console

I was in the same boat, wanted the tuffy but didn't want to pay what they want for one. I was going to build one out of stainless steel at the shop I work at but I found a good deal on one on ebay. You can find a good used one if you shop around.

10 " wide I thought. Get your tape measure out. Treated plywood, stainless steel screws, marine grade naugahyde, stainless steel staples. I have everything except the time.

Huh?

Re: dimension for tuffy console

Hey Jimmy, you'll have a better console than Steel Horse! They use "stainless" steal too!

Re: dimension for tuffy console

jps4ever,
well since you found one cheap, can you take a few measurements for me. the whole point of this is that i want to learn to fiberglass.....i also need a center console that is water proof, i like tuffy's design, so i'd like to make a similar one. see what i am getting at? (btw- i could easily make one from metal, i did metal fabing for a few years, but like i said i want to learn to fiberglass)

thanks all

Re: dimension for tuffy console

80Cj, I like the idea of fiberglass, but it's lack of strength invites theivery. Could you combine both materials, metal, and fiberglass by using the metal as a theftproof base and fibergalss as an overlay for contour and looks?
