i'm putting a cj7 hardtop on a yj, and need to do something different to carry my spare. anybody tried a carrier from a bronco II, or some other rig? i've also heard about flipping the yj carrier upside down will gain some. any ideas on what works and what doesn't. i'll only be carrying a 31 inch spare at the largest. thanks guys...

Re: spare tire carrier donor?

Well, you gotta look for one with a 5 on 4.5" wheelbase unless you get a universal one with the clamp style tie down for the wheel. What you can do is open and close the liftgate and tailgate at the same time - if you want to save some dough. I have a CJ-7 Hardtop on my 95 YJ and thats what I do. I was gonna dish out the 200 bucks for an aftermarket swing away tire carrier. Then I was gonna make one combining my old CJ-7 swing away mount and the YJ one. Finally, I decided to rip out the back seat and put a truckbed style one there. Theres alot of ways to get around creative
