Ford\'s First Attempt At An SUV/ Jeep Copy?

Check out Ford's first try at an off road vehicle...
Would you buy a used car that looked like this?

So many cats, so few recipes...

Naah, larger tires and it won't need a roll cage!

Re: Ford\'s First Attempt At An SUV/ Jeep Copy?

I remember hearing about that vehicle, apparently there was a problem with the tires from a fledgeling tire company named Firerock (or something like that),..anyway, the tire tread kept seperating from the sidewalls and often resulted in the little SUV going over on its lid. After millions of recalls and much finger pointing, the project was scrapped. The SUV became a thing of the past, and wasnt revived until a company named Subaru, became the grocery getter of choice in rural America. Gosh it seems like it was only yesterday, when all of those events were taking place.

I really like the center of gravity on that thing, its got a nice "rock buggy" profile.
Add a cromoly tie rod, ram assist steering, roll cage, lockers, and and there yet to be invented 5.0 and NP435 tranny, and that thing would be ready.
Ill bet it would have been hard to get parts for your Atlass II back then.
