360-401 question about ballancing

Are 360-401's externally ballanced or internally ballanced(by using flywheel/flexplate)?
Can a flywheel from a 304 be used on either and reballanced if necessary?
I want to swap a 304 to a 360-401 with manual trans.

Re: 360-401 question about ballancing

The AMC V-8 flywheels are all externally balanced and not interchangeable unless rebalanced to match your engine. 6 cylinder flywheels are internally balanced but physically fit also. There are also aftermarket billet flywheels available for AMC engines,(Hayes or McLoed), and Mopar Performance sells a Jeep 360 flywheel that is properly balanced. Be sure to use the proper harmonic balancer also, they are different too.
