I have a acquired a new 78 CJ7 with a D44 under the rear. However the passenger side race is spun. Is this a fixable offence? If so, how? When I got my 80 CJ there was a shim in the front hub to fix the same kind of problem. Didn't work very well so I replaced the hub. I would hate to give up the 44 to swap in my old 20...
Any help would be appreciated...

The race was spun in the Model 20 I got and it was gone, gone, gone ...
... leaked like heck and there was no fixing it.

Thanx, Jaffer, but I thought I had read of re-surfacing the race or some such... With all the people out there I'm still hoping there's some kind of repair...

There is a certain off-road shop (Ozark Off-Road) in my area that has the solution of JB Welding pinion bearings to the differential housing. It will work until the race is worn. (I'm still pissed at him doing this to me... Even more so that he didn't tell me. I found out when I took it to another shop and had to pay their time to find this out.)
I had this problem with my Scout D44, It welded itself to the axle so bad that I had to find new axles. I have since gotten the one off and will be using it as a spare for the trail. I am going to tack weld the bearing retainer thingy on the axle for security... but I will only use it to get out of the woods if need be.
If there are still some decent tolerances, but it'll move around, it can be fixed. I have done it with pump bearings, not a vehicle, but still the same nontheless.
Get yourself some "Loctite Bearing and Sleeve Retainer", which is designed for such an application. Next remove everything and clean it up really well. Take a punch and make some small indentations in the housing under the race, then do the same to the backside of the race, but don't warp or bend it. Now slather the "Bearing and Sleeve Retainer" (B&SR) on both pieces, and put together. The B&SR will lock the two pieces together, and the indentations you put in the housing and race will give the B&SR some grip so it'll hold better. I think I got the last tube from NAPA. I can get the Loctite number off the tube when I get home.

Thanx Jeepn, I'll keep that idea in mind. I got the unit apart today. The bearing was toasted and I had to use a puller to get the race out. The housing doesn't look too bad but I haven't got a new bearing/race yet to try the fit. I'm hoping this means it'll still be reasonably tight.

Well, did the dimpling and Loctite thing. Seems okay. I guess only time will tell...
Thanx everyone
