Are these any better regarding sidewall strength and overall traction than BFG MT, General Grabber MT or similar tires? I like the fact that they're not as noisy as the bias TSLs probably because they're radial also. I have 3-5 hr drives to the trails I wheel and prefer to keep my hearing a while longer...but I don't want to pay the extra $$ for the SSRs if they'll cut just as easily as the MTs.
Why not just get the sx's and be happy!!! They arent all that loud and they are tough as nails...I've heard of the ssr's being a little weak in the sidwall..
It's as close to a 1ton as it can get and still be a jeep!!! Gotta love it!!
I have had no trouble with mine, but it is very dry here in NM. The compound is soft and in wetter worlds they may cut more easily. I don't find the noise to bad, the wear has been ok, not great but ok. Not 100% sure they are worth the extra cost all in all but I feel the same about most of the premium tires for the type wheeling I do
They have the weakest sidewall, of any offroad tire I have ever ran. They have outstanding traction on loose dirt, and rock, but they just could not hold up to trail abuse. They held up fairly well on the rocks, but the slightest branch, or stump would cut through them like a knife through butter. I went through 5 tires in 6 months.
I would strongly urge you to consider another tire.

I wouldnt recommend the SSRs, they have very weak side walls for stump laden trails. I went through 5 sidewall in 6 months running those tires. I have never torn a sidewall out in years of wheeling before or after. Its too bad to, because they fit all of your other requirements very well.

OK, that seems to be a clear enough consensus. Hope, nobody puked at me mentioning the thing. /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif
So then, my other question is should I worry about the weight of the tire in case of the SX for example vs. General Grabber? I mean how much of the factor would a heavier tire be - given the same size - in the possibility of axle damage. I'm mainly concerned about my front D30. I've read somewhere that lighter tires are less likely to lead to axle damage.
If I think of the long term I'm leaning towards to just getting the 36x12.50 SXs but I'm worried that I'd be breaking stuff up front all over the place compared to 35x12.50 General MTs or smiliar. Is it warranted?
Tibor,
You could go with the generals, but I have been following your build up for the last year or so, and I can see what direction your headed. You will kick yourself in the butt, 4 months from now if you dont buy the best tire you could run on the trail, and that would be the SX.

Uh, oh! And what direction is that? /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif I remember when almost a year ago just after I bought the heep I was telling my buddy that I won't touch the thing for probably 2-3 years, it's plenty good the way it is for what I do. Ha, ha. He's been rubbing that in ever since. If it wasn't for this board and the people here it wouldn't be where it is today. I guess I can get away with babying the front end with the 36 SXs on it. I prefer to drive with finesse than with grunt anyway so it'll be a good challenge. Next year I'll get a winch so that will give me a way out of some of the rougher stuff. I'll test these 36" TSLs I'm borrowing now for a while, that should get me "acclimated" enough and answer most of my questions probably. Wish I could find a deal on some SXs though... /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif
Do the SXs make the same noise on road as the TSLs ? Should I be considering the GY MT/Rs at all? Oh, and can a 36x12.50x15 SX be mounted on 15x8 wheels?
You can run a 12.50 on an 8" rim, alot of people prefer it really, help keep the bead on supposedly. If you are worried about the weight then the MTR's maybe a better tire for you. If your going to keep the dana 30 up front then don't go over a 35" tire, 36" tsl's are really pushing the limits on your axle, you can always upgrade the axle shafts and u-joints though. If your not a really hardcore driver then just get the MTR's or even the new BFG MT/KM's.
