I've never used anything but safety clean solvent. but I would imagine you could use mineral spirits. Make sure it is ALL washed out before re-installing the valve body or ugly things will happen to your trans! Please confirm Mineral spirits are ok to use as it is only an educated guess.
Mike, you're correct, Mineral Spirits chase the bad ghosts away. I use diesel fuel and keroseen as solvents in the case and for all the parts but the vavlebody... and for that I use Meneral Spirits and Spray Carb Cleaner. After I wash out the hard parts of the transmission I clean 'em up with Spray Carb Cleaner and the lay them aside to dry on a couple of coats of clean newspaper and also cover with newspaper. This keeps a mess to a minimum.
If you haven't take the valve body apart yet, don't. In a Jeep CJ AT the valves and internal parts are machined to specific dimensions and few seals are used, so it's less subject to chemical problems.
Thanks a lot guys. I was figuring on K1 and/or carb cleaner...I'll use Mineral Spirits instead.
