wile doing some inspection before the poker run this week end i found ,cracks in the bend at the bottom of my frame channel at the front of the rear springs. they are just above the factory welds at the spring mounts. my welding is pretty good, not the best i have seen, but i do a passable job when fabricating, but frames something a bit different (soft, high carbon) as i can tell by these cracks, welding a frame can weekend it right? i have a stick welder Chicago-arc welder-140, what stick should i use and how hot? i have a bunch of 6013, would that be a good choice? my frame is not boxed at this location, but it will be soon, but not until after this run. any help would be great, thanks
Greg
I've welded all over my frame and have'nt had ANY problems, and my jeep gets the **** beat out of it. To keep the crack from going any farther, drill a small hole at each end of it, then weld it up. Put a reinforcing plate over it if you like.
If you use the 6013, make sure the metal is REAL clean. 6013 is real fussy about clean metal. If you want a rod for good all around doesn't require a lot of prep welding, get some 6010, or some 6011. Be careful with the 6010 though, because that stuff will weld through manure, but it burns deep real fast. I have always run it DCEP, if your machine is AC, I am not so sure that the 6010 will run so great. But the 6011 is what is known as "farm rod", and will run AC with no real problems. 6010 is used a lot by steel erectors and tank builders.

All my Jeeps are in pieces! Except for one!!
I had a frame crack behind the front spring rear mount a few years back. My dad welded up the crack and it would hold for a few months before cracking again. I read about putting splice plates across the crack so the weld would have a longer line of weld to work against and it has held through some major off-roading since early 1998.
