USA-All Action Alert:

Hey full sized 4 wheelers!
Our spies up in Logan say that the Providence Canyon quarry would make a SUPER rockcrawlling area. In order to make it happen the FS will have to change the proposed designation to "open on designated routes and areas".

Please help get the word out on this. It was kind of late breaking development in the planning process and we need lots of comments. If any of you need me to re-send our ACTION ALERT on the Wasatch-Cache NF let me know.

Here is the specific comment suggestion regarding the Providence Canyon area.

ISSUE: Actually, this is an opportunity more than an "issue". The Providence Canyon quarry was acquired in the Snow Basin
land exchange. This area would make a premier challenge park for 4 WD enthusiasts. Providence Canyon is already a
excellent 4X4 trail. If developed properly, this area could provide for future rockcrawling, 2 wheeled observed trials and other
family events.
COMMENT SUGGESTION: Tell the FS that the Providence Canyon quarry should be available for a challenge park type of
designation. Ask them to change the MPC and ROS designations to permit this to be a designated "open on designated routes
AND AREAS".

Thanks.... MUCHO!

Here's the original alert on the Wasatch-Cache NF:

Greetings All,
A couple of questions for you:
If you could stop a bunch of thugs from stealing from a friend, would you?
What if you had the chance to stop a gang from trashing a neighborhood, would you do it?
If I told you you could be a super hero, and it would only take about 15 minutes, what would you say?
Friends, a crime is about to be committed. It's going to happen right here in Utah and we need your help to prevent it. It will only take about 15 minutes of your time. If everyone who receives this message will spend just a few minutes, we can prevent a terrible crime, and we all will be super heros!

SITUATION:
The Wasatch-Cache National Forest is amending their Forest Plan. (Information at: http://www.fs.fed.us/wcnf/ ) When the draft alternatives were released for initial public comment, most in Utah thought the Forest Service (FS) would "split the baby" so to speak and select one of the balanced alternatives. It didn't happen that way. Perhaps because of the intense pressure that the Sierra Club brought to bear on the process, or perhaps because the FS really believes that a "pre-european" or "pre-columbian" is a desired condition for the forest. Whatever the reason, the preferred alternative (alternative 6) took a drastic turn toward the extreme preservation alternatives. If preferred plan is implemented the people of Utah, and the nation, will be robbed of a national treasure.

WHAT TO DO:
COMMENT LETTERS ARE NEEDED URGENTLY.
Below are some comment suggestions. The deadline is set for November 1.
YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO.... So take a couple of minutes and be a super hero today!
(p.s. even a super hero knows it's ok to cut and paste!)
Thanks,
Brian Hawthorne

Comment Suggestions:
ISSUE: Alternative 5 is clearly preferable to the Preferred Alternative (PA).
COMMENT SUGGESTION: Tell the FS that if you had to choose one of the alternatives, alternative 5 strikes the best balance of providing recreational and resource development and protecting the forest. Alternative 6 is not acceptable.

ISSUE: The PA sets the stage for defining "roadless" as "non-motorized".
COMMENT SUGGESTION: Tell the FS that managing "roadless" areas as "non-motorized" is inappropriate and unacceptable. Remind them that this would be contrary to the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. Tell them that you strongly object to the assumption that "roadless" automatically means non-motorized management.

ISSUE: The FS has failed to adequately plan for the increase in popularity of motorized recreation in past years, let alone for the future. The PA would result in an unbalanced an unenforceable condition.
COMMENT SUGGESTION: Tell the FS that additional Semi-Primitave Motorized (SPM) areas need to be added. Ask them to provide for a quality ATV system on the Logan Ranger District (one is desperately needed!) and that the single track motorcycle trail system is inadequate for even the current need and must be expanded.

ISSUE: The PA has provides for very little management flexibility. Forest managers need some latitude to properly manage for future needs and conditions.
COMMENT SUGGESTION: Tell the FS that you support alternative 5 because it preserves the tools that forest managers need to maintain the overall health of the forest.

ISSUE: Fact: 309,000 acres of the Wasatch-Cache is already designated Wilderness. That's 26% of the forest! Alternatives 1, 2, 3, and 6 all would bring the percentage of wilderness up to 30% and even as high as 56%! Too much!!!
COMMENT SUGGESTION: Tell the FS that 26% of the forest in the most restrictive management known to man is enough. Tell them you do not support further wilderness designations for the Wasatch-Cache.

ISSUE: The PA is lacking a key ingredient. The planning team has acknowledged that there has been an increase in ATV use on the forest. However, the PA fails to address this issue.
COMMENT SUGGESTION: The PA needs to address the following issues associated with the increase in the popularity of ATV use: 1. Adequate Opportunity 2. User Education 3. Proper maps and signage 4. Enforcement All are key ingredients that the PA lacks. DON'T FORGET: Tell the FS that you support the development of new ATV and single track motorcycle trails to address the current and future need.

ISSUE: Actually, this is an opportunity more than an "issue". The Providence Canyon quarry was acquired in the Snow Basin land exchange. This area would make a premier challenge park for 4 WD enthusiasts. Providence Canyon is already a excellent 4X4 trail. If developed properly, this area could provide for future rockcrawling, 2 wheeled observed trials and other family events.
COMMENT SUGGESTION: Tell the FS that the Providence Canyon quarry should be available for a challenge park type of designation. Ask them to change the MPC and ROS designations to permit this to be a designated "open on designated routes AND AREAS".
