In the latest issue of JP mag, there's a blurb in one of the axle articles which says the larger WJ front brakes will bolt up to the ZJ front brakes. Can this really be done?

No. You will have to change everything from the ball joints out.
One nice advantage of swapping from the ball joints out is addition of the high steering already cast into the right knuckle. This may be a great idea, if using them on a soa YJ. I am not 100% sure if this will work, but by looking at them side by side, it should work. Axle length should be measured for sure.
