My first time posting here though I've owned my Wrangler for 10 years. Also my first signif. electrical problem. No reverse lights though all other lights working. Checked the bulbs and fuse - both OK, think it maybe the switch on the trans. Any other ideas? How tough is it to check/replace the trans switch?
It’s a good chance that it’s the reverse switch mounted on the transmission. It happened to me. Easy to replace. Just unscrew old one and screw in new one.
I agree. Switches for manual trannies should have 2 wires attached to it and it just screws into the tranny (I'm not sure what autos have). It's also easy to test it before you buy a new one. Just put it in reverse and use a meter to read the ohms across the two points where the wires attach. The ohms should be low, like 2 or 3 ohms. Do this with the key in the off position so that no voltage is going to the switch. If the ohms are real high (pegs the meter), the switch is bad.
Looked for the reverse light switch on the trans and couldnt find it. Also looked in my Haynes Wrangler manual and couldnt find a ref. there either. Which side of the trans is it on? driver/passenger? Back/front?
I also looked around for the part (thinking if I could see it I would at least know exactly what I was looking for!) and couldnt find it either. Found headlight, taillight, and blinker replacements but no backup light replacemnt. So the weekend was pretty much a bust!
Can anyone help out a proud jeep owner with a new (to me!)problem!?
If yours is like mine (90 YJ w/4.2) you should be able to trace the harness connection from the engine compartment back to find the reverse switch. Mine comes up the firewall on the left side of the engine compartment and has a 4 prong connector. Just trace that line back to the switch.
have you looked under the inspection plate where the shifter is(inside floor board)thats where mine was
