I have a jeepn' bud that has a 76 CJ7 with the older style heater box that won't accept the Chevy blower upgrade. Other than replaceing the box with the newer version, is there an upgrade available? Thanks!
No matter how good she looks, somebody, somewhere, is sick of her crap!
Make sure the heater core is not plugged, replace if suspicious. 180-190 degree thermostat in good working order. Clean out any debris from the housing and make sure all flapper doors make good tight seals. Make sure air cannot go around the heater core, sometimes blocking the space between the outer perimeter of the heater core and the inside of the housing is necessary. Clean or replace defroster hoses and vents. Check the blower motor and replace if weak. Connect a relay to the blower motor so it gets a full 12-14 volts even at idle. These things helped tremendously on my '66. I would think your friend's '76 is capable of far more heat than mine when properly tuned up.
My brother-in-law had an older (late 50's early 60's?) cj with an excellent heater. My father-in-law ran a radiator shop and he built a heater radiator that would keep you toasty in a metal top @ 40 degrees below zero. I don't know if he built a bigger box or just built a bigger radiator to go into existing box. I do know he had a much bigger radiator.
We will be replaceing the heater core today. It was leaking and was full of crap. There was about a half a bucket of leaves in the housing, no idea how they got there. Maybe with doing that and the other things you suggested it will be better. I'm a little surprised that no one has been able to fit a little bigger blower motor in the older style box. I have been proud of my heater upgrade on my 79. Thanks a heep for the tips!
