TFI Upgrade - Cap Adapter does not fit

I just brought all the parts listed for the TFI upgrade of my Jeep ('83, 258ci). The cap adapter (Borg-Warner) does not seem to fit the distibutor. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: TFI Upgrade - Cap Adapter does not fit

I used one from an '81 300 c.i. straight six Ford, worked fine. First time I ever heard of this problem.

'84 CJ-7, 4.2, 3.5" Lift, 31's, YJ tub, TR upgrade, Moser 1 piece, LED's.

Re: TFI Upgrade - Cap Adapter does not fit

HokieJeep, it might be a stupid question but, do the screw holes on the cap adapter line up with the old distributor cap? If they do, maybe rotating the cap adapter 180 degrees will work. I know when I did mine I tried it one way and it didn't fit. Rotating it corrected the problem. By the way, what year Ford is the cap adapter for?

Re: TFI Upgrade - Cap Adapter does not fit

If it doesn't fit someone must have changed out your distributor. Either that or you are trying the adaptor upside down.

Double check that part number, that is probably the problem. Does the cap they gave you fit on the adaptor?

Assuming you've got the factory distributor, they probably gave you the wrong part. Here's a picture of the right one.

Re: TFI Upgrade - Cap Adapter does not fit

on my 1980 I used the following part numbers. They are from "Car Quest" auto parts but the parts are Standard Ignition, a good name. The numbers should be able to be cross referenced by the auto parts guys.

Cap: FD151x
Cap adaptor: FD155

Re: TFI Upgrade - Cap Adapter does not fit

The main problem I was seeing was that when the cap adaptor was screwed on, there were gaps between the base of the distributor and the cap adaptor. The bottom of the cap adaptor was not molded to fit perfectly around the perimeter of the distributor like the original cap does. I would imagine this would cause havoc when water splashed up in there (or dew in the morning for that matter)

Here is how mine looks. It is molded just like distributor.
