Temp Sender Help

Ok so my temp gauge on CJ is not working, among other things. I read the article on off-road.com about the cluster and all. So I went and tried to test the sender, I put one lead on the sender post and one lead to the negaitve post on the battery and got infinite resistance, so does that mean my sender is shot? If so is there anything to replacing this, anything I need to know besides unscrew and screw the new one in? Also my send is bent where the wire slides on so I'm guessing thats not a good thing. Thanks,
David
PS its an 86 CJ-7, with the 258
