taking out front axles

I've got the brakes and hubs off..and I'm left with what looks like a backing plate and the spindle stickint out.
To take the axle out..do I take the bolt off of the top of the box that the spindle goes into..
Then take out the u-joint..then the axleshafts will slide right out?
Am I forgetting something,or will it work like this?
Thanks
Joey

Re: taking out front axles

JOey your spindle is held on by six nuts take them off, then remove the spindle and backing plate. The spindle will probably be a bitch to pull off. Then slide your axles out. The big nut on top that your are talking about is your balljoint.

Can someone please bring me a hammer my 33's just ate my fender again. Damn i need more lift.

Re: taking out front axles

Pontiac has you squared away, the only thing I would add is that I usually work the spindle out using a rubber mallot. Just beat it side to side, or up and down, until you have enough separation to pry on the backside of the spindle. Don't F up that spindle though.

Re: taking out front axles

Check out the attached pic. I separated the spindle from the knuckle using a chisel, and I think it's about the only way it would have come off. Just don't mess up the surface of the spindle or you'll have to order a new one. Once you get it to this point, you can just grab the axle and yank it out. It won't come out until you're at this stage.

This is the '78 axle we tore apart to swap the brakes, notice the lack of the 2 caliper mounting tabs, this one used the 6 bolt bracket.

Re: taking out front axles

Oh yeah, while you have it torn dow this far, you should replace the spindle bearings since the question of their age or mileage is unknown. It's $10 for the complete kit through 4WD Hardware. This is what the bearing looks like.

Re: taking out front axles

Thanks for the pic jeepn..
Mine's a 78
I bought a kit for the bearing a few days ago..but I only got one for some reason.
I guess I wasn't confident I would get everything apart real soon.
I'll have to go get another set.
Thanks
Joey
