Swapping Diff internals?

Anyone know whether or not I can take the guts (carrier, r&p, locker out of a standard AMC20 Diff and transfer them into a Qtrac offset AMC 20? I need the offset diff but I have a centered diff axle w/the gears and locker to match the front. Can I just pull the whole thing out and put it in the other housing w/out having to set up the gears and all? Thanks,

The center sections are all the "same" but there are still manufacturing tolerances. That is why there are shims for the bearings. You might get lucky and the two housing will be close enough to swap everything over but I would still check the pinion depth and backlash after.

You should be able to as long as the spline counts on the axles are the same. I didn't know there were any offset M20s. I thought all Q-tracs had rear offset 44s. The M20 center sections are all the same, even on the Wagon HD20s.

All CJ quadratracs were M20s the wagoneers were all dana 44s. The spline counts are the same for the M20s too. The only difference are the tube and shaft lengths.

Re: Swapping Diff internals?

Hey, thanks all. I was hoping that was the case. Just to fill you all in on why I am looking into this. I a standard AMC 20 that like I said has the 3.73 r&p and locker I need to match the front. This I originally planned to use behind a Dana 300. BUT I don't have the time right now to track down the TF 727 I need to run the 300. Sooo, I plan to put the TH400 and Quadratac I have sitting in my garage back in just so I can get this thing rolling under its own power again (tired of pushing/pulling it in and out of the garage). Hence, I need to use the off-set AMC 20 to match the Qtrac but it has 3.54 gears and I don't want to have to swap the old front axle back in again. I know now one asked but I am at work on a Sunday and figured I could kill 10 minutes by spewing about my Jeep. Thanks for listen, I mean reading.
