Re: best 2 brl carb for you

I have a rebuilt Carter I put on my 258 about 6 months ago and it has been great ever since. I got a rebuilt carb for a 1980 so it doesn't have the computer controlled mess on it. The rebuilder is local, Carolina Carburater I think. Ask around, some rebuilders are better than others.

I have the Motorcraft 2100 that I rebuilt myself and like it. But I have an AMC V-8. I have heard that you can retrofit the motorcraft to the 258 but I don't have any details. The M-craft carb is reliable and easy to work on. It is also very adjustable.

Re: best 2 brl carb for you

You can put the Motorcraft 2100 on or a standard 2bbl Holley with an adapter. it is part #TRD-2086 from summit, about $12. you can also put an old rochester 2bbl without an adapter. I wanted to stay with the carter to keep the original air cleaner (emissions inspections)

Re: best 2 brl carb for you

i have a rochester on my 258. i like it ecxept that the floats need adjusted so it doesn't load up so bad at low rpm's, but since i am not skilled with carbs, i haven't touched it and it is bearable. just my 2/100's.

Re: best 2 brl carb for you

I think the most affordable and reliable swap right now is the MC2100 or 2150.
Takes an adapter plate and a little fabbing.

Re: best 2 brl carb for you

I have the origional carter with computer controled but it's not hooked up I by-passed the computer altogether. and I have a carb also off a early 80's but a piece of the throttle linkage doesn't mount up the same as the 84's carbs throttle linkage I would like to rebuild the early '80's one though. what do ya think?

Re: best 2 brl carb for you

I run a non-stepper motor BBD on my 258 and I like it just fine. Many of the carb problems with the 258 are actually ignition problems that are blamed on the infamous BBD. even with the idle tube leak, my truck runs just fine off idle. I just have to remember to gun it while i wait at the light to flush the extra fuel down into the cyliders. Brendan
