Can\'t figure out how new steering shaft goes on

OK, I feel dumb. I can't see how the new Borgeson steering shaft goes onto the firewall side splines. It has a set screw that I turned back until the joint would slide onto the splines, but if I tighten the set screw down into the groove... there will only be about 1/4 inch of the joint that goes onto the splined shaft. In other words... If I leave the set screw backed off and then slide the joint all the way up in the direction of the firewall, the set screw does not go down into the groove.

Am I supposed to grind a new flat into the shaft splines for the set screw? Dang I wish I had a digital camera so I could take a picture. I don't know if I explained the problem clearly...

my shaft has two grooves in it, one about a 1/4 of inch from the end and another one about 1/2 to 3/4 from the end. I suppose you could always pull the shaft out and grind a new notch in it. It would be better to have more than just 1/4 inch overlap.

I just checked out how far mine is and it's only about 3/4" up on it. I have it on a 79 CJ7. It made a big improvement on my steering.

Re: Can\'t figure out how new steering shaft goes on

Hummmm.... maybe it is a little more than 1/4 " , around 1/2" or so. but it shuuure isn't much, and it could be a lot more. I found a photo in the tech section of it. Looks the same as what I am doing, so I guess it is Ok.

However, I don't like guessing when it comes to steering. ... .

Why does the set screw have to be in the groove? It should work if you slide the shaft on all the way and tighten the set screw wherever it ends up.

Re: Can\'t figure out how new steering shaft goes on

and so it is..... Thanks. I centered the steering wheel and rammed the shaft back on, regardless of where the set screw contacts.

Much better steering! NEw pump, shaft, gear, tires, shacle bushings, springs, ...... I love it!

I have found my happy place!
