catalytic converter symptoms ??

What are the symptoms of a plugged cat converter ? I've recently lost much power and the engine is running way too hot , though radiator and oil are full .

Re: catalytic converter symptoms ??

Those are the symptoms! It will also smell like it is running rich. I picked up a new "convertor" for my CJ when installing the exhaust. It cost me $4 at NAPA (a 24" piece of 2" od pipe) That beat the heck out of a $100 convertor, and since we don't have smog tests in MN anymore...I get away with it. Good luck!

Re: catalytic converter symptoms ??

Symptoms:

1. Rattle in the Cat.
2. Hot Eninge.
3. Exhaust manifold glowing dull to cherry red (Lift the hood at night).
4. Progressive loss of power, especially at higher RPM's and on hills.
5. Little exhaust pressure out the tailpipe.

Confirmaiton:

1. With the engine COLD, remove the O2 sensor.
2. Drive it to see if the power was resotred.

Pulling the 02 sensor will remove all backpressure built up by the clogged exaust and resore power. If power isn't restored... the problems' somewhere else.

Re: catalytic converter symptoms ??

true it sounds like a clogged cat, also ive noticed a blowing sound kinda like if you pucker your lips and blow real hard, try driving like up a mountain next to a guard rail or retaining wall the sound will reverberate off the wall and you can hear it real well, another way to tell is if your vehicle warms up real quick like in the morning my truck would get to 210 in just a couple of minutes of driving where normally it would take alot longer soggysod

if it aint broke, break it so you can learn to fix it

Re: catalytic converter symptoms ??

Well all the diagnostics nailed my problem down for me, as I was about to ask the same thing. So, next question, for those of us that have to run cats, can anyone give me a link or recommendation on a high performance (flow) cat and about what they cost?

Thanks
