84cj w/ 350! its damn slow, what gears to use??

my younger brother just bought a 84cj7/ t4/d300/amc20 spanking new 350 crate motor. i took it for a spin the other day and it was so slow! relativly speaking of course, but the oomph wasn't there.it does sound great though. he does highway speeds no problem, but lots of shudder and vibration while going through the gears. he is running 33's with 4inch spring lift. im not sure of his gear ratio, but i know he needs to go higher. he is a college kid who wont, most likly see the underside of dense foliage or big rocks. street machine, until i drag him out there..heheh thanks.

Re: 84cj w/ 350! its damn slow, what gears to use??

If its got stock gears, they are problably 2.73's. 3.54 or 3.73 would be a much better gear for those tires. I ran 3.73 with 33s and they were a good compromise between street and trail, of course that was with a straight 6... not a 350.

My 2 cents, anyway.

I was thinking 3.73 as well. i had them in my old scrambler and they were fine. he will only use this on street. i dont think the amc 20 will hold up either, i wrecked 2 in my scrambler with a 305! one with 2.73 and the other with 3.54. i managed to blow em both..heavy on the mash pedal..ugh!

He shouldn't have to worry about the 20, that thing except for the tubes is stout, nearly 9 inch ring gear. Its the T4 that is going to go away very quickly behind a 350, they were barely adequate with 6 cyl. power.

My brother (pavement pounder) just put 33" BFG MT and 589s on his '84. He complained about SEVERE lack of power from the fairly healthy 258. After we examined the original window sticker, it was clear.... 2.73:1

It ain't gonna cut it with the new tires!

I had the same problems when I had 2.73's I put 3.55's in and it was better all around. I have 3.73's now but 4.11's or 4.56's might be better in your case.

It will never be finished unless it burns up in the woods.

ill definately try the 3.73 or the 4.11. i know the t4 wont last!! i had the pleasure of wrecking both my previous trannys as well!!heck, it isn't mine, so its not my problem, i just have the responsibility to make the thing as safe as i can for the kid.

Hey CJ8er,
What broke in the AMC 20's? Was it the axles or the differential? Were you running one piece axles or the stock two piece?

I think I know where PsycoJeep is going with this one . I am running 39.5 x 18 inch wide Boggers on my AMC 20 rear . Also has a detroit and 4.56 gears plus Superior shafts . I doubt that a 350 V-8 could brake it .
