Adjusting timing without a light?

I'm sure that my timing on my 258 is off. I'm getting what seems to be chipped, burnt parts on my plugs(the ceramic part of bosch platinums) and I think it might be a timing issue. I know that I'm not running too lean, because that causes that too, I think. How should I go about doing the timing without a timing light? I know how to move the distributor while it is running... Should I let it warm up first? Should I do it during cold idle? It seems to miss the most and pop pop pop during the warmup. Getting light backfires when slowing in gear too.

[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif[/img] Here is what you can do. FIRST, warm up the Jeep. SECOND, drive it at 25 MPH in HIGH GEAR and floorboard the gas pedal. It should ping a few times, but not many. If it pings too much, RETARD the timing. Repeat the process until you get just a few pings and no more.[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif[/img]

why not just buy a light? not that expensive and you will use it more than once. although guys like LEVE have detailed a method without light. do a search and you should find? i would go back to a conventional plug. aren't those platinum jewels expensive? i run champion for .99 cents and runs great.

Yeah, they ran about 2 bucks a peice. I bought them due to the fact that I thought it was the plugs a while ago. Had Champions..... will probably go back to them.
My father actually has a light, but he is on double shifts at the moment and can't show me how to use it. Never done it before. I'm ashamed to say that I don't even know how to get my engine to TDC.[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif[/img]
Also, where exactly should the hose for the vaccuum advance be run from? I think it is supposed to be run from a ported source, but where the heck on a 258 is that?
Sorry for all the dumb questions, my search didn't turn up much that was useful enough to sift through for hours.

well just "high-light" your timing mark on pulley and at 9 degrees with soap stone. then hook up timing light to battery and number one spark plug. plug vacuum advance and start 'er up. loosen dist and turn till timing marks line up.

Setting the Timing

The engine should be completely warmed up.
Disconnect and plug the vacuum hose at the distributor.
Unplug the three-wire connector at the 10" and 4" Vacuum Switch Assembly.
Loosen the hold-down bolt and rotate the distributor to set the timing.

BTDC @ RPM
49 States + Cal. 9 ( 2) 1600
High Altitude 16 ( 2) 1600

On my engine, the first large mark on the scale is zero, the next large mark is 4, the next is 8, etc. Don't forget to reconnect the vacuum hose at the distributor and the connector at the vacuum switch assembly.

A Trick

Your buddy borrowed your timing light and never returned it? Here's a trick I learned from my brother. The timing can be set to surprising accuracy with a vacuum gauge. Hook the gauge to manifold vacuum and run the engine at curb idle. Rotate the distributor clockwise to retard the timing. Now slowly rotate it counter-clockwise to the point where you just reach the maximum vacuum reading. Back off (clockwise) until the vacuum drops by 1". Lock the distributor down. Timing can be set to within 1 using this method.

Said it before and I'll say it again...

a. With the igniton off... loosen the distributor hold down.
b. Pull spark plug wire 1 from the spark plug, and insert a spare plug into it.
c. Ground the plug so you can see the electrode.
d. Rotate the engine to #1 cylinder compression stroke. Pull the plug and stick you finger in the hole to feel compression build up, then watch the timing mark on the pulley.
e. Stop rotation at 6* BTDC.
f. Turn the ignition to RUN.
g. Rotate the distributor to obtain a spark
h. Narrow down the area of rotation that produces the spark.
i. When narrowed, lock the distributor.

The engine's now timed on the cheap and quickly. If there's timing problem now, it's in the:
a. Distributor advance.
b. timing Chain/Belt and gears.
