Bad Oil Pressure

Hey all! Do I need a new oil pump on my 97 TJ with 4.0 liter I-6? At 3000 rpm or higher I get about 40 psi oil pressure, at 1500 rpm I get about 20 psi, and at idle I only get about 12 psi. If I do need a new oil pump, how hard is it to do? Can you get to it from inside the oil pan? Do you have to raise the engine to get the oil pan off? And yes, I have checked the oil level, it's full. Or is there any chance that the oil pressure sending unit could be bad, sending a low reading? Anyone ever here of anyone having that problem? Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated!

Steve

10 psi per thousand rpm is pretty normal.

Re: Bad Oil Pressure

Try replacing the oil filter. Maybe it is slightly plugged.

Re: Bad Oil Pressure

sending units do go bad. How did you get the numbers you have? Off your guage of off a mechanical guage? I much prefer mechanical and even still, 12 psi at idle is not too bad. My 304 drops to under 10 when hot and it does not knock. You could spend a lot of money chasing nothing.

It will never be finished unless it burns up in the woods.

Re: Bad Oil Pressure

These readings came off the factory guage.

Check the sender.

Re: Bad Oil Pressure

Well, changed the oil filter today, and now getting better then 30 psi oil pressure at idle! And here I was thinking it was the pump. Thanks for all the tips.
