Yeah!!I got a jeep today!!!!

I went out today on my lunch break and picked up a 1.00 bargain trader at the grocery store.
I noticed a cj about my price range in there and decided to call him up and check it out.
The guy wanted 3,200 for the 78 CJ-7 with a hardtop and full doors,flame paint job(had a few chips and rust spots..,Spring over,33' tires,4.3L V6,Turbo 350 Transmission,Hurst shifter,and a kinda nice interior,grill gaurd,tire carrier,chrome wheels.
The downsides were that the transfercase chain is out and the front axle is leaking a bit of fluid..and it probably needs a new carb as it trys to die when I am driving down the street sometimes.
He said he has barely driven it in the 2 years he owned it.He had a blazer sitting back there next to it..He said he hasn't priced any jeeps lately and said he didn't know exactly how much it was worth.
I got him down to 2,700 and I gave him a downpayment and I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow and pay the rest(banks are closed today)
Anyone know how hard it is to change the t-case chain out?
I'll take some pictures tomorrow..
Man I am happy
Later

Cool Joey! Glad to see you back in a Jeep. I am assuming it is the Quadratrac T-case? If so, see CJDave. He is the Q-Trac Guru. Doesen't sound like a bad ride. Good luck!

Re: Yeah!!I got a jeep today!!!!

being that it has the 4.3L and th350 i would imagine it might have a chevy x-case too. a 208 maybe? you might want to find out. not that it is a bad thing. tom elliston of sunray eng. (they are the originators of the dana60/ford 9" hybrid frontends)uses 208's in the jeeps he builds. he says they can take alot more power than the stock jeep cases. this includes the d20, d300, etc. actually he uses the dodge version of the case because they have a fixed yoke output and uses a chevy input gear (because he usually runs chevy tranny's) this might be an option for you if you get this jeep. sounds like a good one. double check it but $2700 sounds like a good deal.

There is not an adapter from a TH350 to a quadratrac. Either you don't have a quadratrac or you don't have a TH350. I think you either have a swapped in transfer case or a TH400 transmission. I suspect the former. What transfer case was swapped in? Most of them are not that difficult to change either.

Re: Yeah!!I got a jeep today!!!!

I'll find out tomorrow when I pick it up.
He said the chain was broken in it,so i was assuming it was a quadratrac.
This is gonna be hard to find parts for cause I don't know the year of the engine or tranny!
He didn't build it, so I don't know if he knows what kinda t-case it is.I'll ask him tomorrow. He did mention it was a tubro 350,but didn't say the t-case so I'm guessing its is the t-case that was changed.
Does the turbo 350 tranny have a low first gear?

Re: Yeah!!I got a jeep today!!!!

is the rear pumpkin centered or offset? how about where does the t-case rear output come out? does it have a 4x4 shifter or is is vacume operated? if there is a shifter where is it. throught the tunnel or infront of the drivers seat?

offset rear or offset rear outupt on x-case = q track
vacume operated x-case = q track
shifter through floor just infront of d/seat = qtrack low range box
shifer through floor (trans tunnel) = maybe a 208 but not definately not a qtrack

Re: Yeah!!I got a jeep today!!!!

It is a through floor shifter, with front lockout hubs.
It is a b&m shifter or something on the t-case.
I don't remember if the rear pumpkin was offset or what..

Oh yeah and the t-case shifter is on the other side of the tranny shifter, which is where it was on my 76 cj5 with a t150 and dana20.
