Idle on my YJ

Hello all,
Well I 'm trying to figure out what happened to my 1989 YJ 4.2 (Carb)5spd. Up untill 2 days ago this engine ran so smooth you had to look at the tach to see if was running. Now Once it warms up it ...The idle speed meanders about. eventually stalling, thats if you dont save it buy stomping on the gas pedal. It has the stock carb, and also a recent tune up.

Re: Idle on my YJ

Hey, mine is doing the same thing even after numerous cans of carburetor cleaner through the tank and spraying cleaner down in to the carb itself. I've changed my fuel filter several times. New plugs, wires, with Jacobs ignition and TR style cap and rotor. Cold idle is good, but once it is good and warm when I let out of the gas it idles up and down up and down then eventually stalls out. Is it something simple or is it just the "wonderful" Carter BBD I've heard so much about. Any ideas are greatly welcomed!

BTW mine is an 87 YJ that has been completely and rebuilt by a trusted professional mechanic.

Re: Idle on my YJ

Welcome to the world of a Carter. Save yourself the pain and go on and get a Weber. Its been one of the best upgrades I have done. My Jeep runs good and I think the only thing better would be fuel injection.

Good luck

Re: Idle on my YJ

If it sputters when you stomp on the gas it's probably a bad accelerator pump or poor fuel pressure.

Re: Idle on my YJ

Well I found the culprit....It was one of the 7/16 mounting nuts....One in front Was loose and i guess the carter was sucking some air......Its running very smooth again.......Yippie.
