Transmission advice PLEASE!!

Ok, I need a new transmission and I need to know which ones will bolt up to my engine/transfer case without an adapter. Can anyone help me on this subject. Its a buick 225 v6 with a dana 18. I had a th400 (before it went out) and I was thinking I would like to convert to a manual transmission. I like the low gear of a 4 speed but I was also thinking it would be nice to have that extra 5th speed for highway mileage. Is there any 5 speed transmission with a granny first gear that would bolt up or will it take an adapter. Also what 4 speed could I put in. Any help would be great because my jeep is sitting idle until I can get it fixed. I cant wait to drive it again and I dont exactly know what to do.

Just a suggestion but you could weigh the cost between swapping in a 5 speed vs swapping in a 4 speed and a saturn overdrive. The 4 speed/saturn would be kinder to your rear driveshaft length.

Re: Transmission advice PLEASE!!

how about a jeep t-18a with a ford input shaft. the x-fercase input gear will need to be changed but other wise that end should be ok. not sure what would need doing at the bell housing though.

is the 225 buick a standerd small block chevy bell houseing???

The 225 does not have the standard SBC bellhousing. It has the Buick Olds Pontiac bellhousing.

Yeah, I dont think it has the chevy bell housing. Do you know what the gear ratio for 4th gear is in the t18?

Re: Transmission advice PLEASE!!

it cost ALOT to get an overdrive, figure your mileage savings per year, and gas cost VS ythe cost of the overdrive. usually you have to drive a zillion miles to come out ahead
