Transfer case and tranny question

I have an '87 YJ with a 4.2L 258 and a peugot tranny that is shot. Firstly, I found someone willing to sell me an NV3550 out of a 2001 TJ with 9000 miles on it with all the accesories, including the master cylinder, slave cylinder, bell housing, flywheel, hoses and clutch for $1,000. Does this seem like a good price? Also, if the clutch was used with that tranny in the TJ, can I use it with the tranny in my YJ or will I need a new clutch? Also, I was told that the NP231 transfer case that I have in my YJ should be a 23 spline, like the newer YJs and TJs and that the 21 spline 231 was only used in 4 cyl. models. Is this true? Thanks in advance.

Donny

BTW, that price includes delivery of all the parts and tranny.

Re: Transfer case and tranny question

My buddy has an 87, he just put in a '95 AX-15 to replace the evil peugot. He paid $750 canadian ($485 us)for tranny, bell housing, tranny & t-case shifters, so I would say it sounds like a fair price.

As for the input shaft he has a 258, and his t-case was a 21 spline input, so he had to change shafts.

Re: Transfer case and tranny question

Sounds pretty resonable to me. As to the spline count,,, yes you will need to put a 23 spline input shaft in the 231. The Peugot tranny does have a 21 spline output in it. You may be able to trade out the 231 with a salvage yard for the 23 spline 231. although I would use the older 231 with the new input shaft. they have a better bearing set up than the 92 on up.
