Brake problems on CJ7

Hi all,

I have a 1985 CJ7 and while moving it to the driveway I gently applied the brakes and the RR tire locked up. It seems that whenever I apply the brakes the RR tires brakes more than the other three. The brakes have all been rebuilt sometime last summer and the Jeep hasn't been used that much. Anything I should look at before taking the brakes apart? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Brake problems on CJ7

Purely a guess, but oil on the linings from a leaking axle seal can cause this problem. Better pull the drum and take a look.

Re: Brake problems on CJ7

I thought that oil on the brakes makes the brakes that are effected useless . Anyone have any opinions on this ? Where is CJDave when we need him .

Re: Brake problems on CJ7

Grease/oil on brake linings changes the friction qualities of the material and they lock up or grab SEVERLY! That is the case 95% of the time with a grabbing brake. Other 5% is a mechanical failure inside the drum (ie: something fell off and is bound up in the drum). Either way, you gotta pull the drum to see. Good luck!
