Found out why it wont go in gear

Well yeasterday I couldn't get the jeep to go while in 2wd. the driveshaft was spinning but no power. well I figured out why. I have the AMC 20 rear axel with a 2 piece shaft. it apperers that the hub and shaft didn't get along so the just ate eachother.(see photos) I am assuming that I will have to get an axel shaft kit, is there anything that I must be careful of? any special tools needed?
thanks

Re: Found out why it wont go in gear

dunno if I want to go to the one piece. I guess I should look at the other to see if it is worn at all. I am planning on staying with the standard two piece. is it tough to change?
Is the one piece just a simple swap? or does it take major tools?
thanks

Re: Found out why it wont go in gear

Man, i dont know how much easier of a swap the one peice is than the 2 peice, but i think you would be crazy to keep the 2 piece. They are the weakest peice of crap ever. THe one peice is so much stronger.

Re: Found out why it wont go in gear

Don't go back to the two piece, you'll have the same problem over and over again. Go to the one piece kit and be done with it. I helped a friend change his out a couple of weekends ago, it took maybe 4 hours total and that was with screwing around in between. The only special tool you would need would be a press to put the new bearing on the new shaft, and if you don't have one, you just take the bearing and everything down to a machine shop and have them press it on for you, just takes a few minutes and you would havbe to do the same thing with the two piece anyway. Take your other one apart and look at the actual splines that hold the two piece together and you will see that it will do the same thing, there is no doubt it will happen. Change it once with one piece and save yourself the problems in the future.

Re: Found out why it wont go in gear

I swapped mine over to 1 peice last summer and have not had a problem since. The 2 peice will cost you $200 to replace both side not counting seals and bearings, the 1 peice superior's I got were $299 and that included bearings and seals. NAPA will press the bearings for cheap.

Re: Found out why it wont go in gear

if I do get the new one piece, what do I need to take to NAPA to get the bearings pressed in? do they get pressed into the axel tube? thanks

Re: Found out why it wont go in gear

No, the bearings/seals/assmebly get pressed onto the one pice shaft....then you bolt it all onto the axle shaft flange....I am in northern NY by the way...
