valve seats

I have a 76' 360 that I want to put in my cj7, the guy at the machine shop said that they dont have hardened valve seats. He said I should have them put in for $100. If they dont have hardened valve seats for unleaded gas why do they seem to last so long in the jeeps. And do I really need them?

Re: valve seats

I am not sure of the exact year, but there was a point in the 70's when all the manufacturers went to the hardened valve seats. The lead in the gas added a little lubricity and cushion for the valves. Without the lead, you can damage your valve seats if they are unhardened, or you can run a lead additive. I would recommend having the seats installed and save yourself a headache down the road. A $100 now is cheap insurance.

Re: valve seats

I do not know when hardend valve seats started. But I would assume it to be in 74 when unleaded gas became manditory. Some one please correct me if I am wrong.

Re: valve seats

Hardened valve seats started to become standard in 75. I had a 74 CJ5 and as regular gas become more scarce and lead substitutes became more expensive, I had the valve seats changed.

Re: valve seats

I talked to the machinist again and he said they didnt really start putting hardened valve seats in until mid80's. I am not sure whether to beleive him or not because is out to make money anyway, so why not tell me that more work needs to be done! I think Im going to scrap the 360. I have my sights set on a 351w out of an 84 ford truck from a guy at work. In the long run I think a ford will be more reliable and there are alot more parts for one too.
