help! won\'t go in gear

Hey all, I have a 85 CJ-7 with a 258 and an auto tranny. I just got finished reinstalling the tranny after it was rebuilt. my problem is, when I had it on jack stands, the wheels would turn. I put it on the ground to drive it out of the garage, and it wouldn't go. I can see the drivshaft spinning but it wont go. I am not sure what the problem is. would low level of rear end oil cause this? the tranny is full as well as the transfer case.
I was thinking of putting it into 4wd and trying to move it, but i haven't yet.
thanks for the help

does the driveshaft spin when its in 2wd? It will not make a difference if the diff fluid is low. It may burn out the bearings over time, but not over night. If the driveshaft is turning, open the diff and inspect the guts, if everything is normal, do you have 2 piece axles, and are they spinning in the hubs?
... did you take the tcase apart any time? make sure the lever isn't binding. Hope this helps.

Yes, the rear driveshaft is turning. that lever you are talking about, is that the one that goes between the tranny and the transfer case? on the transfer case is seemed to go in fine. it went under that lever easily. I am going to check out the rear diff in the next couple of days.
any other thoughts?
thanks

Hmm, if the rear dshaft is turning, your spider gears might be screwed, gears, or if you have 2 piece axles, you might need to tighten you hub, or its screwed too.

I jack up the rear of the jeep and one of the rear wheels has some play in it, sort of like when a front wheel bearing goes out on a 2wd car. This may be it. how can I tell if I have 2 piece axles or not. its got the stock rear(amc 20) is this a standard 2 piece?
I am planning on opening up the rear dif. what should I be looking for at the spider gears?
thank you for you help

thanks for the compliment. the scoop is for the gt350 style '65-'66 mustang. I like the style so i put it on the coupe.
Its actually only got a 200cid straight 6 engine. not very big, but strong as all get out.
