4.56 gears or no??

My girlfriend and I just acquired an 85 CJ-7 and it has a freshly rebuilt 4 cylinder in it and we are trying to decide on a gear set for the axles. We are going to be running 33" MT's for now but plan on going bigger when we get funding for a more powerful engine. I was thinking 4.56 gears would be ok witht he 4 banger and 33"s but not sure. I have the straight six in my cherokee and I know gearing for that but I am a little clueless what would be optimum for a 4 cylinder. We will mainly use it around town and on the rocks so I want some low gears to help it along but I don't it pushing 4,000rpm's at 65mph either.....thanks

push your limits, be extreme...anything less and you'll never learn.

If you're going to run 33s with that 4 cyl. 4.56s or 4.88s are the way to go.

Check out the gear calculator at http://www.4lo.com You'll need to fill in 5 of the six variables. I come up with 3017 RPM with 4.56 gears and 33" tires @ 65 MPH.

Re: 4.56 gears or no??

I agree 4.56 minimum. I've got 4.56 in my '90 with 33's and a 6 banger and love it. I'd for sure go with 4.56 or 4.88 with a 4 cylinder.
