front suspension problem, (axle crawls forward)

well got my newer dana 44 front installed and on it's 1st test i had problems.

so my jeep is very bouncey without the front shocks hooked up and i way driving slow and making it bounce up and down (kind of silly, it was going like 12" or so up and down) and my wife says something feel off, i look and the freaking driveshaft came apart (this has happened before) it's one of the reasons i rotated my pinion up so far. so i was also trying out a new shackle setup i made, experimenting with location before welding.

so i've known i need a longer slip-yoke but have been waiting till i arrive at a point that the drivetrain and suspension quit getting altered.

i believe the main problem is that with a shackle reversal and alot of droop my wheelbase growns, i've usually pulled the driveshaft apart when trying to climb somethink steep and get traction.

do you think i could make some kind of limiting strap to keep the center of the axle from moving forward but will still let either side droop or compress to maintain articulation?

Re: front suspension problem, (axle crawls forward)

I drove my jeep home from the hobbie shop, and without shocks, I almost lost control several times, just from the bouncing...

Those shackles look like they have to much of an angle on them, with a shackle reversal set-up, usually you have to worry about the driveshaft compressing to far and bottoming out. What is wrong with the old shackle placement? with the new shackles you have on there you will need a extra long slip yoke! You must get a $hit load of droop with those shackles like that! My 2 cents.

You could put traction bars on the front. Built right and positioned right they shouldn't limit your travel.

Re: front suspension problem, (axle crawls forward)

shackles do look like they are at alittle too much of an angle. a limiting strap and a traction bar will hurt your flex (if you used a track bar with the shackle mount it wouldn't bind but it wouldn't help your prob. either). what you need is a long travel d/shaft. make your own from square reciever hitch material. they are supper strong, offer lots of travel and and are cheap to make. i run one on the front and rear however they are not balanced so if you run on the road much you might not want one on the rear. as to why your axle moves so much look at the positon of your shackle when you are flexed. your frontend is swinging forward when it droops. the longer shackle lets it swing that much further.

Re: front suspension problem, (axle crawls forward)

i've got to do something to get a more telescoping driveshaft.
i remember seeing one someone made that had 2 "stub and sliders" i'm curious ours comes out.

high5, i'm also thinking about making one like you say, using square tubing, it has some good points.

i also think the shackle is at too much of an angle,

Re: front suspension problem, (axle crawls forward)

gregg.. that double slip joint d-shaft was my idea, but someone else actually made one a while back and he said it worked well.....I dont think your shackles are angled too far, i prefer them to just bottom out on the frame at full flex. last year i had to actually put a limiting strap on the passengers side to prevent the axle from drooping too far and the d-shaft falling apart on every climb.it worked well, but i built a longer travel d-shaft now.I have found that I almost never use all that flex anyway.

Here is the square recever hitch shaft I made after I snapped the double yoked one(full throttle, 38.5SXs, Big rock).
