engine question

I have a 1992 Jeep wrangler with a 2.5L 4 cyl engine with 102,000 miles on it. For the past 6 months I have been experiencing backfires about twice a month. Earlier this week I blew out my 3rd muffler since this started happening.
I don't know if this is related but I have also noticed that I am getting a substantial amount of oil/gas in my airfilter and in the vacumn lines coming from the valve covers. A shop I went to said that I was in need of new rings and that I would be better off with a engine rebuild. Has anyone else experienced these problems? Any suggestions, or should I start saving up now?

Re: engine question

It sounds like a rebuild is needed, or a swap if your not happy with the power of the 4 cyl. Sounds like your getting alot of raw gas in the exhaust also(besides the air filter). It could potentially be dangerous if enough raw gas is present and ignites. It might take out more than just a muffler.
