There is a lot of info here on the 8.8 swap. Do a search if you're interested, and you will find a lot of info.
The basics are:
width is fine for a YJ, it's about 1/2" shorter than a D35 I think -- don't have to cut it.
bolt pattern same as a YJ -- stock wheels fit right on.
disc brakes from the factory
some came with 4.10s from the factory -- no swapping required, if you want 4.10s (which I do).
strength is on par with a 9" or a Dana 44 (simimlar to one in some respects, the other in other respects)
availability is good.
The axle will be releatively new (you want '95 and up), so it should be in good shape. Scout axles, etc, will be 20+ years old if you get one.
When I was searching for what would be best for me, I couldn't find a YJ/XJ metric ton Dana44 (rare), custom axles are $$$, scout axles need new bolt pattern changes to use the 5 on 4.5 wheels, etc., etc.
You will need to cut the perches off and get new ones welded on, and there is a little brake line modification that needs to be done -- nothing major. There are more web sites on how to do this by those that have.
MORE has a kit to fit this axle to a YJ. It's a few $$, but you can get all the stuff in one box, or try to get it cheaper elsewhere.
