just got a CJ-5 for $600 and have some problems

I got a 1977 cj-5 for $600 and the tranny pops out of 1st gear. Its a T-150 and I have to put it in 2nd with the TC in low range and then shift into 2hi. How can I fix this and what do I need to swap a T-18. Thanks

gotta do hella work to these boys

For $600 bucks your lucky it drives at all.

Do you think insurance will cover the carb if it some how "teleports" behind the tires of a 350 with dualies?

Re: just got a CJ-5 for $600 and have some problems

the bodys is in average shape just some surface rust, one fender is real bad I'm going to replace that some time. Some of the floor pan on the drivers side is rusted through. The engine has a new computer, fuel pump , starter solinoid ,and the carbrator looks new also. The only thing wrong is first gear in the tranny.

So does it have a transplanted engine in it? The reason I ask is in '77 there was no computer.

You ain't got no problems man! you got a rolling $600 parts bin.

Or at worst, you got the cheapest RUNNING project I've ever heard of.

On the existing tranny, it sounds like your synchros are shot. Rebuild would probably be the way to go, pull the whole thing and have somebody work over the transfer case and tranny at one shot. On the T-18, not sure what it bolts to, give Advanced Adapters a call, they could tell you what it'll bolt to, or if necessary, sell you the adapter/bellhousing.

In the current issue of JP, they mention that a two wheel drive ford T-18 will bolt to the T-150 bellhousing and that an adapter from either advance or novak will bolt it to the transfer case without having to change driveshaft lengths.
