Info on CJ-5

Hey everyone, this is my first post, I have been checking the board for a while and was wondering if anyone could give me any information about late sixties / early seventies CJ5's. Say like 68 to 72. I have not seen many post about them and was wondering what to look for or if they are a good project to take on because I know a guy who has one to sell that seems to be in okay condition with the Buick V-6 in it. Thanks for any information, I am not sure on the year, but know it is in that range.

Re: Info on CJ-5

I own a '70 so I will tell you what I know about them...As far as I have heard the 225 V6 is a decent little motor...I however have a Chevy 4.3L V6 that was in there when I bought it...I hear that it is an easy swap of the Buick dies and you can't find another one...

Onto other things I know...They put solid-axle Dana 44s in the rear starting in mid-1970 I believe...Mine has a "built in March '70" sticker on it and has the 44 in the rear...

Part way through '70 they put the gas tank under the rear instead of under the drivers seat...Kinda of nice under the rear becuase it is bigger and you don't have to sit on it... :-)

Also as far as I know the stock tranny in those years was the T-14 which is a pile. I blew one up already and I don't trust the new one...Also they used a funky mechanical clutch linkage that is stiff as hell...Oh well at least my leg is stronger now...

For most part however it turns out to be a really unique few years of the CJ5. I like mine partly becuase I like the challenge of finding stuff for it...However if I did it again I would look for one that had the gas tank in the rear becuase I don't really like the one under neath...

Well I hope that helped a little...Just take into consideration that I only claim to be knowledgeable...Some of this could be wrong...

Re: Info on CJ-5

Thanks for some info. If I remember right, the gas tank is under the rear. The V-6 seems to run well and the tranny is not that great. As far as the body, it is pretty rusty, but the floorboards have been replaced as well as the roll bar. It has a few odds and ends that have been replaced such as the front leaf springs. Anyone have any idea what is a decent price? Thanks.
