callibrating fuel gauge

I just bought a used fuel guage and I've been told I have to calibrate it. I was wondering if anyone know how to do that? I'm not sure if the guage isn't working, or if it is my old wiring. I was also wondering if anyone knows what the resistance reading should be coming off of the fuel sending unit. Thank you for the information.
