Spark plug wires are shocking me!

I need help on engine principles 101. With a ruunning engine, when I grab the boot of the spark plug wire to ensure that it is nice and snug on the plug, it shocks the crap outta me! When I touch one of the wires between the distributor and the boot, it's not near as bad. It it supposed to do that? How do I correct it? It looks like there is a ground wire going from the block to the frame. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks.
BT

The spark has to jump the gap on the spark plug. If the gap between the conductor and your hand is smaller than the spark plug gap, guess where the spark is going to go?

Re: Spark plug wires are shocking me!

1. Check them with the engine off. 2.They make insulated pliers for that, don't grab them barehanded. 3. If they leak spark that bad it's time to replace them.

A good test to do is, in a darkened area (night or close the garage door +++++ CAUTION ++++++ MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A EXHUAST HOSE VENTED TO OUTSIDE) take a mist spray bottle filled with water only and with the motor running, give your distributor and wires a few squirts. If your wires or cap are bad you'll see sparks, replace any thing that sparks. Don't really soak the distributor.
