Questions about overheating and lack of power.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the board but I am already impressed with the info contained here. I have an 81 CJ-5 with a GM 4 cylinder. I am having a couple of problems with it and need some help. When I drive it for several miles it leaks antifreeze from the overflow on the radiator. It doesn't seem to be running hot, but I seem to be losing quit a bit of antifreeze when I park it.
I know the solution to the next problem but, putting in a bigger engine has to wait until next year.
The engine seems to have lost power since I bought it several months ago. I have to downshift to get up even small hills on the road. I have replaced the plugs, and checked the timing. The engine had been rebuilt before I bought it and doesn't burn any oil. Any ideas of things to check or possible cheap mods to get more horses out of this thing until I can do my engine swap next year.

Thanks

Re: Questions about overheating and lack of power.

could the thermostat be stuck closed or very close to closed which causes the engine to overheat and make the anti-freeze over flow since the anti-freeze can't circulate and causes it to boil, and when your motor overheats you will lose power.. just a thought...

Thanks, I thought of checking that a couple of weeks ago, and got sidetracked. DUHH. I'll check that after I get done painting it next week.

Re: Questions about overheating and lack of power.

The catalytic converter could easily be the culprit on the loss of power issue. When it's cold, smack it pretty good and if you hear it rattling inside it is breaking up and may need to be replaced.
