hand throttle cable tensioner

Where can I get a hand throttle (ie, bike brake) cable tensioner? The bicycle shops around here only sell high end stuff anymore it seems, and they act like I'm a leper for asking for one of these "old school" parts. Any other sources?
Thanks.

wal mart and places still sell the "cheapie" stuff. Try them.
Also you want to use a shifter, not a brake handle.

Re: hand throttle cable tensioner

Tried Walmart, Kmart, Target...they dont sell the tensioner, or even assemblies that contain a tensioner. The only thing I saw with tensioners were whole bikes for $69.99. I have the shifter, cable, and everything all hooked up, but it doesnt work very well or hold the RPM's constant since the cable tends to get pulled towards the throttle plate. I'm hoping the $.25 tensioner that I cant find anywhere is my answer.

Anyone?

Re: hand throttle cable tensioner

Mine is made right into the shifter handle itself. It's a thumbscrew that ou can tighten to "lock" the position tight or loosten it so that it works just like your gas pedal. I know this isn't a great pic, but if you look close you can see the "wingnut" on the base of the hand throttle(on the chrome). This is what all 10speeds came with for 20 years.

Well for some reason the "image" linking feature doesn't seem to be working tonight. Here's a link.

Re: hand throttle cable tensioner

I guess you could drill out pivot, tap the backside. and add a small shoulder bolt & spring washers. OR go to a used bike shop and grab one for $5. DirtDog is right, I haven't seen a shifter that doesn't have a tensioner at least 15 years.

It's no budget buy at 30 bucks, but
Rubicon Express has a hand Throttle kit. Maybe you can ask them if they will sell you just the tensioner.
