I have a friend that tried Black Bear last week, had to turn around, a bulldozer and snow were blocking it.

Re: July4 in the San Juan Mountians

Sorry or schedules didn't overlap and we missed again.
We're getting closer though !
The East slope of Ophier Pass is a walk in the park compaired to the others ... very pretty though. The West slope was another one of those narrow single path, straight down shear edge jobs that one would rather be climbing rather than decending... .
I want to go back and do Engineer and the others for sure... and yeah, it would be great to get a SWB group up there. Just think of the raunchous fun and bull****ting sessions the camping sessions could be .
Jacque is finishing her write up on our adventure and I'll post it later today.
I've just had a peek of the beginning of it. As usual, she certainly has a different outlook ... to say the least!

Re: July4 in the San Juan Mountians

black bear is supposed to be a little radical according to something i read on the web. "three-point turns, possible vehicle damage and don't take a rental jeep". we didn't even go east of teluride to check out the bottom of pass for signs and such. my dad is 85 and born in colo. he has been on all of these passes over 50 years ago and has a lot of history to tell. "don't take a rental jeep? he asked? hey that's the one you SHOULD take!" absolutely some awesome country there. i can't believe how the old mining structures have survived for so long and are still so many of them. must be the weather that preserves them- no hot baking sun. can you believe how the miners built all of it and did all the work! wouldn't get that kind of work out of us wimps of today! those were REAL men!
