just signed up

Hi gang!! I just signed up and can't believe that out of 18,902 registered members, no one had this moniker.
I've been reading this board for quite a while and have been impressed with how everyone interacts and helps each other.
I have a '81 CJ-7 w/Chevy 350,4" suspension lift, 32" tires, roll cage, winch. I don't do anything super difficult, but do like to have fun and am looking forward to some modifications (which I may ask for advice from you on)
Anyway, just wanted to say HI and looking forward to talking more.

Re: just signed up

pardon my lack of info. my rig has been mostly parked for the past 5 or 6 years, I'm just now starting to think about getting it on the dirt again. the tranny is the stock one,I don't know much about it but I think everyone says it's real weak. used advanced adapter and works fine-exept it's starting to pop out of 2nd gear. time to think of upgrading.
thanks for the welcomes.

Re: just signed up

You're probably running the SR-4 (curved shifter, the T-176 has a straight shifter and is a better tranny), which is a terrible tranny, the second worst ever put in a Jeep. I blew my SR-4 to bits behind the stock 4 cylinder. I'm surprised it's held this long.

An SM465 will fit right into your jeep, but you may want to use the D300 to help keep the 4" lift, otherwise the driveline angles will suffer.

Welcome to the BBS, this is a great place to learn and help others.

Re: just signed up

Hey Jeepn, thanks for the tips. Yes, it's the SR-4 with the bent shifter. I guess it lasted so well because I don't put my foot into it super bad. I've always thought of putting a Chevy tranny in when this one goes. I guess that's the Chevy lover in me showing through. I'm not sure how difficult or practical that would be though. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: just signed up

I know you'd probably like to run the NP205 that usually comes attached to the SM465, but I think it'd be a little long to maintain your driveshaft angles. I'd look to get an adapter from Novak or AA (Advance Adapters) to use your D300 along with the tranny. It would bolt to your existing motor, so no problems there, but the adapter is going to be $400 to $500. You'd never break the tranny, and the D300 is a good transfer. They can usually be found for $250 for the tranny and transfer, along with the bellhousing, and you could probably get $150 or more for the transfer alone to recoup some of your money. I don't think it'd be that hard at all, but it may take some time to install the new shaft in the tranny or D300, I don't know much about those kits.
