I just put a new exhaust manifold on my 79 CJ7. Where the old manifold was flat and a flange gasket was used at the pipe connection, the new one has a beveled extension that is shaped like a flange gasket. My question is, is this some sort of compression fitting or is there a special gasket that goes on this setup? Thanks.
The headpipe should be formed to seal against this type flange without any gasket what-so-ever. The new manifold flange eliminates the need for a gasket which always leaks on the earlier type. If your headpipe is perfectly flat where it joins to the manifold, you should go to the muffler shop and have a new header pipe made to fit. If you already have the flared pipe, it should fine.
Hope this helps, good luck!
