AX 15 rebuild cost

I just got the quote from Lee Myles to replace the synchros, synchro hubs, bearings, seals and labor for $1500! does this sound excessive? it comes with 12 months 12,000 warranty and I can't do it myself as my tools are in storage for another month.

Re: AX 15 rebuild cost

I think the brass is about $25. ea. X 5. Usually 5th never wears. The bearings can be expensive, so you don't want to change every one, just the ones that are noisy and worn. Your best idea of what to to is determined on how it drove before it came apart. Going into reverse without grinding can be expensive to repair. If it is yours, and your are carefull on how you shift into reverse, you can probably get by not replacing the 1st/2nd hub and reverse idler.

If you plan on building it yourself, don't bother removing all of the shift rails and interlock pins. Just clamp the intermediate plate in a vise, and remove the 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, forks from the rails with the shafts, and leave the rails in the plate. These rails are quite a puzzle, and can easily be assembled incorrectly.

Re: AX 15 rebuild cost

well.. we rebuilt the tranny today.. wasnt too bad.. all we needed to replace was the 2nd gear synchro.. but it was a pain to get everything apart.. to split that main shaft..but once we figured it out.. and did it.. it really wasnt that bad.. putting it back together was way easier.. we had a shop pull the main front bearing off.. and used a puller for the 5th gear.. then it came right apart.. we will install it in the jeep tomorrow.. so far total.. we have about 1 1/2 days in it.. and that is taking it out of the jeep..
