92\' 4.0v6 wrangler..no top end? what can be done?

i just piscked up a great buy for my wife.. a woman owned wrangler for 8 years, tops never removed just a daily driver.. she did put nice rims and tires on it though. 30x9.5s this jeep motivates throught the first 2 gears, slows a bit in 3rd and there is nothing moving the jeep in 4th or 5th. when cruising at highway (65) i have to downshift to 4th to pass anything and thats even slow!!! no top end whats so ever. is there any way i can make this thing motivate in 4th and 5th? im used to my jeep witht the V8, motivates all the time the engine has 93,000miles. im upgrading the tires soon to 33x12.5 which will incur a gearing change...any sugguested ratios? thanks..

Don't know about the V-6, sorry.

If it had an I-6 in it, then I'd suspect either the Cat or the gearing, maybe both.

Wranglers did not come with V6 engines. If you find out exactly what engine is in your Jeep, Im sure someone here will be able to help.

Holy sh*t thats a long way down!

beg your pardon, wrangler did come and do come with the 4.0 I6. they also had the 4.2 I6 for a while. hence, she has a 6cyl...which has amazing torque but not top end.. your right about the v6, that was a typo..

Re: 92\' 4.0 wrangler..no top end? what can be done?

Well, maybe it needs a tune up. Clogged injectors? plugs? wires? cap? rotor? The 4.0 is pretty powerful for a stock jeep with 30 inch tires, so you shouldn't have too much trouble making her go. Did you get any maintenance records with it? Could be a partially clogged cat too, but I would think that would happen in the lower gears too.

Maybe a K&N Filter? Throttle body spacer?

Good luck
Pete

CJ8'ER, I was just busting your chops, I knew you knew what you were talking about.

Did it ever have good acceleration in those gears? Our '97 with the 4.0 will rip through all of them, and we've had it cruising at 95 mph (speedo goes to 100) for hours on end, and it still would have taken more.

If it did used to travel well, I'd say gearing isn't it and look towards the tuneup aspect. I'd also look to the cat and muffler, which when partially clogged will still feel like it has some zip in the lower gears but doesn't have the power in the upper ones.

Re: 92\' 4.0v6 wrangler..no top end? what can be done?

My 94 with the 4.0 will definetly get up to 90 or so, but even at 65, I can pass in 5th. I guess it could just be what you are used to, my last car before this was an Acura Integra, and compared to that, the Jeep's high-speed passing is much slower. But, the Acura did not do so well in the mud!
Anyway, I agree with the other posters, get a tune up, and then see how its running.

Re: 92\' 4.0v6 wrangler..no top end? what can be done?

i know...she rips throught the first three..i have only driven her this week. i bought the wrangler last month for my jpchick. being owned by a woman who knew nada about cars probably had never had a tune up.i need to check into that. i cant figure out why it really won't go over 70 except for downhill.. and i need to strain to get it there and keep it there. the rpm is still around 2500 or under. the investigation continues.. tune up this weekend!!!

Re: 92\' 4.0v6 wrangler..no top end? what can be done?

could the brakes be dragging? are you sure its not in Low-Range? don't get upset or laugh! i sold a mechanic a 231 transfer-case. the lady told him it won't go over 45 mph. he said bring it in ASAP. well, it broke down on the way to the shop. they thought the engine siezed. turned out that the 231 had siezed. she had be running it on the interstate and all over town, IN LOW RANGE! there was a little goo in the bottom from the burnt fluid and it was locked up solid. just something to check. matt

Re: 92\' 4.0v6 wrangler..no top end? what can be done?

Check to see if the throttle body is fully open when the acccelerator is pushed to the floor. Does your YJ have air conditioning? If it does, make sure that the AC duct work dosn't interfere with the accelerator. Laugh if you will, but this was happening on my YJ and I was only getting 3/4 opening of the throttle body. I picked up approx 30hp for free!

Good Luck,
Steve
