How much play in AMC 20 pinion yoke?

While I took out my driveshaft for U-joint replacement, I noticed that my pinion yoke going into the AMC 20 axle rotates quite a bit without the wheels moving. Like 3/4 of an inch! Is this supposed to happen? How can I check it?

If you have a Detroit locker you will have much more than that. Mine rotates about 1/8 - 1/4 turn.

Re: How much play in AMC 20 pinion yoke?

I have a detroit locker in mine with new 4.56 gears and it has over an inch of play. It drives me nuts because when I engage my Auto trans and the jeep is on fast idle (while cold) I get a jolt and clunk.
