Tiny 12 point bolts holding U joint on...ack!

I'm trying to replace my toasted rear U-joint and the rear bolts holding the straps in place are tiny 12 point bolts. My 1/4" box end wrench is just a bit too big and slips. My smallest metric is 8mm. No room for vice grips. Anyone know what size they are? Where do I buy the U-bolt/nut setups? (I heard they are better).

you can use a 5/16's... 12 point socket on them... the u bolts are found in your auto parts store... in the red help area... mostly you will have to ask for the jeep ones.. you can use chevy's tho... they are slightly different.. but will work with some grunting.... i have found that the jeep ones are cheaper at autozone.. if you have one of them around...

Those could be 6.5mm heads. If you're daring change 'em out for allen-cap head bolts. NAPA should have what you're looking for.

Zimm...
Well, before i swapped to the ubolt style from the crappy strap style, my bolts were 12 point 1/4" the socket can be purchased just about anywhere they sell single sockets, as MOST socket sets do not inlude this size. got mine at napa.

in terms of swapping to a better method of attaching the u joint to the yoke, you can pull the existing yoke off, and replace it with a $20 u bolt style yoke. or, if you are lucky, like me, your yokes have enough space on the backside of them to drill out the bolt holes and slid on some ubolts. it takes alot of creativity and patience to go thru the parts book at the store to find a u-bolt that will work.
BTW, the u-bolt you can buy for the yoke that is supposed to accept the ubolt, will NOT work if you drill out your existing yokes, the ubolt is not wide enough, and needs to be spread. if you want the part number of the u bolts i used, or have any questions, email me privately, because i may not check this BBS soon enough for you.

No patience, and no creativity required.

You can get the Spicer part numbers at any NAPA, by part number.

Good luck

Re: Tiny 12 point bolts holding U joint on...ack!

well, when mine decide it was time to let go, I was going about 40 down the street...you talk about a wake up call!! I looked at all the parts stores around here, and wasn't satisfied with anything they had to offer. I went to the jeep dealer here and got the exact factory replacements. When I installed them, I put some locktite on the threads. this has been over a year now, and I check them often, and have not found any loose since then. I think the strap kit was about $7 a set from the dealer. Oh, I used a 5/16 12 point nut driver with a pair of vice grips fastened to the handle to get the bolts loose.....Ben
