How big can you go with a AMC 20

I have a cj-7 with a 44 up front and a 20 in back with the one piece Moser axles, the engine is a 350 and I'm running 33 Super Swampers on 15 x 10 Hellcats. I want to go up to 35's - 36's, I talked to my local 4x4 shop and they said that with the Moser axles that the AMC 20 should be able to
to handle the move up in tire size. I would do it in a heart beat if the straight 6 was still in it but with the 350
will I just end up on the side of a rock wondering what happen to my Moser's?

Thanks,

Steve

Your 20 should be able to handle the larger tires with the Moser axle shafts. I don't think I would personally chance anything over 35's, but it would probably handle 36's. What is your gearing in the axles, you may need to do a gear swap if you go to 35's or larger, just a thought.

Thanks Kerry, I've been thinking about the axles I didn't even think about the gears, right now I'm running 4.11's, I wish that would work cause I hate swappin gears.

keep the 4.11's and do a tcase gear reduction kit
keep your drivability and have great low range.

im hoping to afford the 4:1 reduction kit for my dana 300 but i thionk ill be running into problems because of the 1980 model dana 300 short output shaft

Re: How big can you go with a AMC 20

It should be able to handle the 35's just fine. Keep the 4.11 gearing. 4.56 would be better but the 4.11 will be fine. It all has a lot to do with driving style too. If you drive like a nut off-road then you take a chance of spinning the pressed in axle tube. I know a guy that did it running 33's. But he drives like a lunatic....to the floor all the time. He's fun to watch though!

Re: How big can you go with a AMC 20

i ran 35x16 boggers all last year with a healthy v-8 and 4.56 gears and a detroit in my amc 20 rear with a d-44 in the front. i never had any problems with the d-44, but i bent the moser shafts in the rear with LOTS of abuse. i have since put 1 ton stuff in

Re: How big can you go with a AMC 20

Thanks Guys! I think I'll move up to 35's, get the tera low range kit and stop worrying about my axles, WHEN they break, thats the time to tell the wife "uh oh, I'll HAVE to put in a 60!"

Thanks!

Re: How big can you go with a AMC 20

I want to do the same thing but my front d30 is holding me back. One question, is it possible to swap in shafts from a newer d30 with the 297 ujoints? If that doesnt work what are some other options of beefing it up? And could a d30 with those shafts hold up to 35s with my 258, if it works?

Weld the locator holes to prevent the tubes form spining. This happens very easy and can cause a lot of damage.
